i have some suggestions for refashioning ST a bit:
1) Don't you think ST needs a another background and also the frames and stuff?
2) Maybe install some background music
3) Give all the ships a picture

it's already been done, ST is a whole lot renewed, music would take too much time but you can download stuff if you look at your preferences menu. and most ships have pictures.

i wouldn't go for the black background ( it already is black and has stars... doubt..)
and if you don't mind making pictures, why don't you make them and then send them to the admin. if he likes them he'll use them.. end of story
