only linux , because the

html is a child of linux (unix)
the www is child of linux (unix)
php is a child of linux (unix)
mysql is child of linux (unix)
apache web server is linux
the most of the web sites are running on linux
and my linux desktop is running well for years now (and it is easy to use too)

and all is legal to copy and after all it is really the better operating system .

the source code of windows is secret (propertiery) because it would be open for all noone would buy it , because you could edit the source code and compile it yourself.

and linux is exactly like that . the complete source code of the operating system and all other programs are open , so you can easily edit it and recompile it if you wish. the most of the stuff is made by easy to understand scripts that can be edtited by the user. and noone buys it because it is free.

additional to that is unix (linux is unix based) a much better operating system for server/router/webserver/mailserver solutions . since a lot of years made for multi-user / multi tasks system .

the desktop enviroment lacks a little bit of performance on slow machines (below 500 Mghz) and it is not easy to install (sometimes, depend on hardware) , but it is always the better choice, because you can hack your system to make it virus/spyware/microsoft proove !

there are more reaasons to use linux : as microsoft has nearly a monopol for operating systems , they can dictate the way how things are made in the computer buisness. if there wouldn't be linux , microsoft would install copyright-system for data files like mp3, software, games or even pictures to prohibit the share and copying of those files . linux is programmed by the users and it stands for free copy/modifiying/improvement of software -> freedom in the computerworld.
from that point of view there is no alternative to linux.

i am using linux as long as spacetrace exists, and i am happy to use MSWinbla never again !

*********************
download your installation disk here (for free):
you can install it parrallel to your windows system if you have a free partition !

http://www.debian.org

******************
or even more easy: try out a single cd standalone linux version (just boot from cd to try out linux , no hardisk/installation needed !) naturally free !!!
