I don't believe he was reading the newspaper since it was upside down AND he was blind :p
Also there seemed to be holes in the newspaper for him to watch through. Anyway i don't think i totally got everything behind the movie but i liked it 
And im not sure if the blind guy is committing suicide aswell...

maybe he committed suicide, maybe he didn't. i think he didn't, but he might have. i think it's great that people understand it very differently and find different things to associate with other things in their heads.
