how do you capture a new planet?
do you need to have a ground force ship?

you don't capture new planets in this game. you evolve only on one planet until your evolution reaches 100%. then you start over on a new planet.

It is possible to take your ship production to another planet making it easier to reach certain targets or to manage your production even when your planet is under siege.

also it's possible to colonize planets and conquer other colonies, but that's more like a minigame and does not affect main score.

ST is different from most other space strategy games because you can't expand. Everyone has about the same quantity of resources(manpower) that you use to build fleets of spaceships to destroy your enemie's fleets of spaceships. so it's impossible for one player to own the game just because he or renee has played it longer and therefor has more power. Quality of your fleets counts more than quantity.
