There is one possibility how you can see it:
If you are in an alliance yourself, fight him. Then look at the battle history and look at your fight (you can find it by comparing the date and time with the one of your battle report). If it is shown as against "no alliance" he is in no alliance and if he is the name of it is shown. |

Oh I forgot you can of course also send him a message and ask him. 
Or in some cases you can find it out when he is in the top ten list. |

exact!
this is because when you fight against another fleet, your commanders are picking up the opennents alliance communications so after the battle, you know in which alliance they are |

well it is importent who's alliance u are attacking at
like if you attack the top 5 ya maybe (number 2 is okay to be attacked [only 4 mems])
but if u attack 1 person alliances nothing will happen to you
