As the title suggests, what is the point of inventing. After reading the first two pages of the New Inventions forum, I've come to the conclusion that ideas are roughly to be categorised as one of the following:
1)Some stupid/ridiculously overpowered/impossible/etc. idea that is almost certainly beaten down to where it came from.
2)Ideas that could actually be a good thing, but which are still beaten down.
3)Ideas that are good, and thought to be good, but which are comletely ignored. The last time something invented was put on a planet was almost 6 months ago.
Considering these points, what exactly is, the use of spending 4 credits to invent something? |

I invented a ship some months ago, I brought it up three times and it was ignored three times. Bullshit ships get more attention than mine does :'(
I'll try again

I'm not sure where I OR admin stand on this issue. Even some inventions that admin thought would be a good idea and help them with server traffic eg: the TPC Probe has failed to materialize. I can only conclude that admin are very busy with other things in thier lives if something that would help thier server gear perform better is also ignored.
I certainly don't take it personally....but ...it is unfortunate that some of these new ships are left in limbo.
On the other side of the coin, there is a lot more ships to choose from now the pre-warps have become automated ship factories and quite a few improvments have been made to dress up the site and assist new players with fleet set-ups.
I think it's starting to pay off with all the new players I see around. |

you're not gonna see ships added without ships being removed to make way for them. _________________ Space Mercenaries Inc.

Would that be due to technical logistics or due to the fact that during an evo you can only manage to build about 2/3 of the ships currently available ?
More choices make more diverse fleet combinations. |

What's the point of inventig you ask? In one word: "none"
I waited for my dear old sharpshooter for, well, since 21.02.2003. It was said "it almost made it" (<= quote ... by the, erm, "new ships to be put ingame commitee" ) It's been later moved IN possible new technologies. It had no comments, just votes for at least an year and 9 months. Yep, still no comment even from admin himself, though that someone had to move it to Possible Inventions... ugh.
Though as far as I know, it hasn't even been placed on a planet (well, unless such has happened during the last year, and,has not been advertised on the forum - unlikely).
Here's the true piece of history of a ship that... "almost made it"
http://www.spacetrace.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1195&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=
BTW if anyone encounters it on a pre-warp... pls... contact me
The usage of the credit system for inventing ships in particular was completely useless. All that was needed to stop the *flood* of overpowerfull inventions...
Was as I proposed - Just change the f*king description for the "new invention". It suggests (to a newbie) that inventing a ship actually means, you get access to it. So, why should we be surprised that newbies were inventing over-powered ships by the dosens?! They expect them to appear within what, a week at most? - in JUST THEIR production screen for f*ck's sake!
Quote: | your scientists can start fundamental research in this section.
please give a detailed description what they search for.
~ only a balanced theory can lead to a new invention ~ |
If that was replaced with something of the sort of:
Quote: | You can suggest a new technology. If your suggestion is found good/balanced by other players, and, admin of course, it might be added to the game for all who are racially capable of building it. it might take some time to do so. For reference, check out the possible new inventions in forum (a link here), to see what is considered a good/balanced invention. And see the Impossible Inventions section (link here too) to see what is NOT. |
and presto. No silly unbalanced inventions, no more newbs thinking "Hell, new tech by my design? Just for ME? I want a doomstar for 1 MP!".
But noooo, why not make it so that for a newb it's somewhat *scary* - so they (almost) don't invent stuff - why? is it due to the credit (for all I know, some newbs might think credits=points), and, pointless for experienced players cuz they know it's unimaginably hard to get the ship in-game within the next respawn time, actually, within even as far as THREE YEARS.
Why change some 3 lines of description, which would stop the flood of unbalanced ships? Which in turn leads to only a few somewhat balanced ships? Which in turn leads to an ease with which (for admin too) to read the new inventions, and, to not have to check 10, to find one, which could be spoken of as "just not very balanced, so no go"?. Which in turn won't stop you (and admin) from reading them altogether?
Why do so, when you can just introduce a completely NEW system. Sheesh.
But that's beside the point.
So, what's the point of inventing with not one, but THREE words you ask?
"next to none".
I've given up on inventing a long time ago.
End of story.
