to make the game easyer to get into for new players we should extend the help-texts at the bottom of each screen.

you can see them while you are in newbie protection mode (and also in the guest account all the time)

if you like, you can post some help-text here.

we would add it to the screen at the bottom then

same for the texts of the animated proffessors at the top of the screens

about the alliance thing, my first account i did and i mest up but i learned from it, making an alliance with ur first account is fine cause it helps people learn

When new people start an alliance it will mostlikely fail. For many persons that will spoil the fun of the game. The point about the new people is that we must try to let them stay in the game.

When they participate in an existing alliance they will learn that, even when you're own alliance fails, there are other alliances who work well. In the existing alliance they can learn how to rule an alliance, so when they start their own in their next evo the alliance may succeed.

The new ones will like the game better when it all works fine, so send them the message that it is better to join another alliances before they make their own.
It is better for them (They see the good side of the game before the bad side) and it is better for us (more fellow gamers on the long road)

this topic is about you to post a text, that we could use for the bottom of the game-screens.

you started a discussion, if we should tell the newbies that they should join an alliance or not, which is already there in the HQ-Screen, if you look in the guest-account.

so the discussion didnt bring us anywhere.

if you like, you can post a text here, that we could use for the help-texts

BISHOP say...

Spacetrace can be viewed in the same light as chess, in this regard.

All players are on the same playing field, with exactly the same "number of playing pieces". It is how you use these "playing pieces" that differs you and your opponents.

The races are balanced well, so choice of race matters little.

Everyone has the same researches within the race, so you develop your fleets based upon personal preference. Your fleets are then a mix-and-match of the ships you are capable of building. It is then how you configure, position, and apply your fleet that sets you apart from others, chap.

If this were chess, I would venture to say that a queen would have 900 manpower, while a bishop commands 400.

I hope this clarifies things, old bean.

If you have any other questions, lad, feel free to contact any newbie helper (With the stars, son, the stars!) within the game. I also encourage you to pore over the forums.

Run along now...

maybe this could be written somewhere to awoid questions about manpower.

We have written some guides at:
NoStars Forum

Post a request on the general board for recruit access.

We are also looking for instructors. Any veteran players who feel up to the task are more than welcome to join Scolar, Moon & me who are currently writing them

where are the guides there?

please post some new helpful hints, that we could add to each spacetrace page

we already have these:

Quote:
"/research.php"=>'
you can research one technology at a time. (to start a research, click on the picture next to the researchtime).
<br>you can see details on every invention by clicking on the name.
<br>a good start would be the vessel scan or improved field theories and the deep scan probe after, so you can scan space for foreign fleet compositions
',
"/probes.php"=>'
with your probes you can scan other regions of the galaxy. just enter the x/y/z-coords into the fields and press "start probes". you should choose coords, that are not too far away from your planet, because the probes would need too much time. for the beginning choose a target of about 20 sectors away from your planet<br>
<br>
once an investigation probe reached its target, you can destroy it. the communication links will stay in your com-screen
',
"/com.php"=>'
here is where the games communication lies. you can send in game messages to players you have comlinks with. <br>
<br>
there are three sub categories in the com menu:<br>
<b>players you know:</b> players whose fleets have come with in range of you planet are place here. coords are not included. <br>
<b>battle contact:</b> whenever your fleets encounter another fleet, you will find the contact here. <br>
<b>already scanned:</b> when you send probes out, all the active planets and their coords are placed here. <br>
<br>
<b>messages:</b> all the messages that have been sent to you, and you have not deleted, are saved and stored there for further use. <br>
<b>IRC:</b> this is like a chat room. you can go here to talk to other players and get questions answered. <br>

',
"/com_planets.php"=>strtolower('
In here, you will find two different types of planets. <br>
<b>Abandoned Planets You Know: </b>Players who have not signed on to their account for more than '.detailedtime($absenttime).',
are thought to have abandoned their planets, which is what you see here. <br>
<b>Pre-Warp Planets:</b> These are planets that do not have warp capable ships.
Hence the name. Though, they may have other sorts of ships or technologies,
so you might want to send a fleet to them to check them out.
'),
"/hq.php"=>strtolower('
this is your head quarters. it contains all the information about your planet.
it has your score, your coords (tip: don`t give out your cords to just anybody,
make sure you can trust them first.)<br>
you also see the race which you have chosen and the population of your planet.
you can also set your alliance tag here. in order to join an alliance, you must have the name and the password of the alliance (you find other players in the com screen and irc).
or you can start one yourself. <br>
<br>
<b>alliance statistics:</b> here you can see the stats of all the alliances of the game.
you can also see who the top ten players are and who has control of the black hole. <br>
<b>battle history:</b> when you battle someone, you can come here to see if they were in an alliance or not. <br>
<b>ship statistics:</b> here you see all the statistics of the games ships. such as, the average amount players have and such. <br>
<b>preferences:</b> here you can set various options for the game, change your password...
'),
"/view_battlereports.php"=>'
after a battle, you get what is known a battle report.
it contains what went on during the battle.
ships lost, enemy ships destroyed, ect. here you only see a summary consisting of only yours
and the enemy`s losses and also your score.
you can, click on the date and time that appears in the upper left hand part of each summary report
for a more extensive report.
',
"/fleets_top.php"=>'
to move your fleet you first have to build a mothership.
you have to move it into a fleet together with some other ships and then type the destination coordinates
into the three boxes at the top. <br>
when you reach the target and there is an enemy fleet, you will automatically fight against it,

but only if your and the enemy fleets have
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<tr>
<td valign="top">different attitudes:&nbsp;&nbsp;</td>
<td><img src="pics/attack.gif" alt="" width="17" height="17" border="0"></td>
<td>&nbsp;&nbsp;</td>
<td><img src="pics/defend.gif" width="17" height="17" alt="" border="0"></td>
<td>&nbsp;&nbsp;</td>
<td>or <b><font color="#FF0000">code</font></b></td>
</tr>
</table> <br>
<br>
you will find help in the forum <a href="http://forum.spacetrace.org/viewtopic.php?topic=513&forum=5&14" target="forum"><b class="norm"><b>here</b></b></a>',
"/production.php"=>'
here you can build your ships, probes and buildings.
some buildings are already built when you start playing.
the manpower is a percentage of people on your planet that works for your space-industry.
they are either busy with building ships or with controling them.
so you only get them free, if you recycle ships or loose them in battles.
if you loose ships in a spacebattle there are new people employed at your home base,
so then you have the manpower free again.
',
"/ships_on_planets.php"=>'these ships cannot be build by anyone.
they can be only found on these planets.
some of the ships are (good) inventions by other players.
you can see the remaining number of ships on each planet.<br>
click on the name of a ship to see how it works in the manual (there will be a link "view battle details of the ship" as well)',

"/alliance.php"=>'when you start playing you automatically join one of the two starter alliances <i>Twilight Force</i> and <i>Imperial Guild</i>.<br><br>
ask your leader for help or join another alliance. go to the alliance statistics menu and send a message to find an alliance with experienced players. this is the best way to learn how to lead your own alliance. it is not advisary to start a new alliance right away.'

and these for the mad professor help at the top of each page:

Quote:

case "/welcome_page.php": $tip=array('
hello,
i am your '.$racename.'-professor.
i will give you hints throughout the game');
