You have 1000 fighters in your attacking fleet.
The defenders have two fleets of over 1000 fighters. In the normal scheme of things this would be bad for u
But add in a retreat fighter, and you have enough fighters to fight both fleets. |

| Other that senario, the retreating fighter has no other practical use. Unless retreating fighter have another use, please let me know. |

you can defend your base using the same principle at the previous example.
You are attacked by several fleets with large class one.
YOur smallish class one as a few retreats included.
Your base survives. (usually) |
