I am curious (this is a newbie question)...how did you come up with 1800? If you have a second, could you post the math so I can learn?

Well, first see what one Doomstars do:
doomstar (class 4 ship)
this ship has a core that can create a black hole which destroys the doomstar and gulps all ships of class 1, 2 and 3 on both sides. (caution! self destruction!)
attack/life: 0/900
manpower: 2300
researchtime: 2 d
buildingtime: 22 h
e-ray-technology
needed research:
gravity
OK, now i have 250 Nano Bombers
nano bomber (class 1 ship)
this ship destroys one class 1 ship and the broken pieces of the explosion do 1 damage each to two ships. but it's useless against ships of other classes.
attack/life: 0/1
manpower: 2
buildingtime: 11 h
nanite-technology
Now, calculate: Doomstars 2300 MP and 250 Nano Bombers 500
2300 - 500 = 1800
