So...do we need to keep a mothership at our base for the other ships at our base to work, or is the fact that there is a "base" enough?

No, a mothership you only need for travelling in the galaxy and that's the only purpose of it. And it's not smart to put a mothership in an empty fleet because if you are attacked they will win very easy 320 points.

very good. thank you for your quick reply.
i was going to send out a fleet but it would leave me no motherships at home.
it makes sense I would not need one at the base, but i figured i would ask before i found out the hard way.
