Your friend's planet is set on defense.
If you want to protect him, set your fleet attitude to defense ( you don't do that by typing defense, but you have to click the shield, which will then become blue )..
If your friend has got a fleet that is at home, but not in his base, it should have the defense attitude, too.
Then you can help him defending

Using the same attack code is better than having to switch to defense though

If you have the same code you can still defend someones planet - it has happened with me a few times - i hvae both given defence and received defence from someone with the same attack code

this only works with the alliance-attack-code

you can defend an ally and set your attack code to the alliance-attack-code (get it from your leader) and then it will not fight against othere allies with defense OR the alliance-attack-code
