You might want to read the Manual first before asking the questions, since many of them are cover in the document.

I'm a noob also and I spent quite some time today going through the manual trying to find information about that topics and didn't find any. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough but information in this thread was very helpful to me.

And, just my two cents, I like it this way. No colonizing, no increasing population etc. It's among the things that makes this game different from others. Most online space strategies are about colonizing and increasing population. So, don't change anything!

You can move your shipyard to another planet, via the pioneer ship, this is the closest you will get to colonizing. But although this can be a strategic advantage, you now have to defend two places your planet with the research centre, and your new shipyard planet.

You also lose one fleet spot, not an issue unless you like to drive 3 fleets.

No you dont do it much, but in a serious alliance war I have done is successfully, and less successfully on several occasions, first time and the best was in the battle of deadeye in the Merc wars in round 4. Olden days. Did it again in the borg wars but wolfboy tracked me down, although not every time.
