The black hole.
An overflowing source of energy. The same energy pillaged from the planets,
the same lifeblood that spills from the Chronotron Nebula, and the Gravitron Pulsar.
But pure, from the source of the galaxy.
In its physical form this energy is in a gaseous state. Treated properly, it can
be liquified and converted into fuel. Warp fuel. The most efficient, clean burning, warp fuel possible to create.
The motherships are the standard warp ships, used by all warp capable races.
They have many different names, many different designs, but identical engines. The motherships have been in existance since long before the earliest recorded history in the Interplanetary Library of Gaibram, the largest and most diverse collection of information collected in a single cathedral.
The engine can be modified, but each modification changes the desirable features of a mothership, and creates a slower or less stable ship such as a Nanite core driver or a Kazuulan fleet tender. The mothership is perfect; strong, swift, reliable, and affordable.
It is from the Master Command of a mothership that seats the Battle Commander, in this instance Commander Aris Du Boire of the human planet of Concro, with Lieutenant Marcus Talanius as his second. They pore over battle reports and maps, and brainstorm on sheets of paper. Surrounding them are several technicians, interpreting encrypted messages and taking dictation from the Commander. The mothership has been named the "Wildflower", and is one of three in the vicinity.
Commander Aris is a man of small stature, just barely over five feet tall. Aris is well liked by his crew, for he is good natured and forgiving. In contrast, Aris can be a shrewd opponent, and an unforgiving victor. His uniform is always perfectly pressed, and he only wears the most formal attire. His tie is always snug around his neck, his Commander's hat in position, and boots shining like mirrors.
Lt. Marcus Talanius, on the other hand, cares little for appearance. He does manage to keep his uniform in order whenever Commander Aris is aboard. When Aris is not aboard his ship, Talanius is often commanding manoevers in his robe and slippers. Marcus is average height, average build, and soft of voice. Soft of voice, because he never raises his tone, and speaks slowly and deliberately, much like a schoolteacher for the youngest children. He chooses his words carefully, so as not to spend time talking when he could be doing other things.
The Wildflower has two sister ships, the Butterfly and the Chestnut. Battle Commander Aris is in charge of all three, and each is led by it's own Liuetenant. Aris has accomodations aboard all three vessels, and can spend his time on any without sacrificing comfort or efficiency. He has been aboard the Wildflower for two days now, discussing with Talanius the proper response to several threatened attacks.
The Wildflower and the Chestnut have been at the black hole for four days, accumulating fuel from the hole, at the rate of one thousand pints per day. The Butterfly lost most of its support fleet during a battle, and is returning from Concro at the very moment with a new contingent of ships.
"Eight hours sir," informs Philip Salabaster, lead technician on the floor. "Two fleets from planet Oppoara."
"Damn. What does that give us between battles right now, Liutenant?"
"Ok," Talanius taps the table absentmindedly as he checks current incoming report. "Hm. Two hours, thirty three minutes for Napalm Jack, five hours for Quicksilver, eight hours now for Duke Sue with his two fleets, and thirteen hours for Old Dog."
Aris frowned and bit his lip. The Butterfly would be there in under ten hours, leaving the Wildflower and the Chestnut to accept these new incomings shorthanded. "Do we have coordinates for this new fool, this Duke Sue of Oppoara? How about an alliance for him? Philip?"
Philip searched his comlist, with negative results. "Nothing sir. I'll broadcast a message out to the rest of the alliance." Philip looked up from the monitor. "Commander Aris, I have his name here, he has no open tag."
"So we know nothing but the fact that he has two fleets, and that he is Kazuuulan." Aris took a sip from his mug. "Let's send the Chestnut to some nearby coordinates as well, to check for any other incomings. We should have Napalm Jack on our Deep Scan Probe within the next couple of minutes, too, so Philip, pull up his battle history for us, would you?"
Aris left very little to chance. He does not like to sacrifice a single ship without good cause, and it pays off for him very well. Aris had been known to defeat over ten fleets on a single trip, before reinforcements could arrive. He had a method of continual movement, with one mothership acting as a "runner", to keep two fleets at a near constant state of battle readyness. When all three fleets were at a combat state, it was terrifying to behold what he could do.
"Commander," Talanius addressed Aris, "The Chestnut is ready for warp."
"Before they go, transfer over nine cruisers, and our Spectre. Bring the rest back under the command of the Wildflower."
"Very good sir."
The Mothership was a fantastic ship to behold, and strong, yet vulnerable. All warp capable races had also designed every manner of battle ship, from huge, class three assault ships to tiny one man fighters. These ships have no warp capabilities, but could be enslaved to a Mothership, and taken to the furthest reaches of the galaxy. The battle ships are necessary to protect the practically defenseless motherships, as well as homeworlds from large invasion forces.
All races can build motherships, and the design varies little. The Wildflower is the mothership of the primary fleet, "fleet one", belonging to Aris of Concro. The front has been painted with flames, spilling back over the starboard and port sides, in a flashy display of creativity. On the port side, some of the flames are missing, due to repaired battle damage, and the ship has not been available to finish the detail for several months.
The battle ships are what sets the races apart; the devastating Doomstar, created by the E-rays, the infinite Troikas, of the Nanites, the unforgiving Human Kamikazes, the masterpiece of the Mycilloids, the Major Reconstructor, and the unpredictable Kazuuulan Mantis. Most of the battle ships can not provide it's own warp speeds, but still needs warp fuel for operation. Each ship plays a different role, and it's results can be incredible at the hands of a master, or they can fizzle when employed by a lesser Commander. Aris is a master.
Over the next two hours, the Wildflower continued to harvest from the black hole, and the Chestnut checked two nearby coordinates for incomings, with negative results. The Chestnut was back twenty minutes before Napalm Jack's fleet was due.
Napalm Jack arrived at the hole on schedule, no funny business. Napalm's fleet came out of warp, and ships began to take position, class one in front, followed by the larger ships of the other classes.
"Dreadnought," stated Talanius, with a smirk. "with four Cyclopses, ten cruisers, and a stack of fighters. No class two. Doesn't he learn his lesson?"
"Im going back to my quarters, I'll be back before the next fleet arrives."
The battle was a crushing defeat for Napalm Jack. One fighter met Napalm's large class one, while an array of Aris's holo-clone ships and destroyers met the larger class three. The Dreadnought proved to be of little value, and the Cyclopses, when cloned, provided Aris with the key to obliterating Napalm's class one. After the battle, Napalm had a lone mothership left, easy for the Chestnut with a few Bounty Hunters and fighters.
After the battle, the Wildflower and Chestnut set out recovery ships, to salvage any warp fuel that the ships still held in their bowels. When finished, Talanius and Philip Salabaster recieved the report.
"How much did we get?"
Philip checked his monitor. "Nice. Thirteen hundred eighty one pints."
"And that," Talanius replied, "we dont have to share with the allies. Aris will be pleased."
Philip looked up from the monitor. "Aris already knew how much we would win, without a doubt." Philip looked back at his monitor, and began typing. "We have a message from Junior Griepp, of the alliance. His planet, Minttoppos, is under attack."
Aris, upon hearing this news, immediately returned to the Command. "Let's check the Deep Scan Probe for Quicksilver's fleet signature," Aris stated to Philip. "If it looks like we can't clearly beat it, we can go to Minttoppos, and assist Junior Griepp." Aris poured some coffee into his mug. "And send a message to the rest of the alliance, and see if there is someone else that can help Junior of Mint."
