can some1 plz write me a simple step by step guide of how 2 start a battle and does the person ur attacking have 2 be online?

First go onto the production screen and build as many ships as possible but only 1, 2 max mothership then after theyve all build go onto ur fleet screen and convert all ships into fleet 1 or whichever you should now see a box at the top too type in your enemies coordinates and finally no your enemy does not have too be online

ive sent them 2 where the other planet is but i dont think they have attcked it how do i know if they have?

You should have a battle report maybe there in besiege mode?

well welcome to the game. what probally u did was attacked an abonded planet or a pre-warp planet. may i suggest a good fleet for you.

Base:
1 Fighter
1 Destroyer
1 Cruiser

Fleet 1:
900 Fighters
100 Destroyers
5 Cruisers
1 Mothership

Fleet 2:
899 Fighters
99 Destroyers
4 Cruisers
1 Mothership

Attack code can either be the same as the alliances or make your own up if your not in one.

Also read the Manual!!!
