a scientific program of famous scientists and engineers trying to explain the effects and the mechanismn of the shieldgenerator has come to an end. the official note to the result of the efforts is as follows:

"
mechanism: a huge intelligent computersystem with a subspace-field-generator.
(the engenineers denied calling the shield-generator a "ship". they prefer: "s.g." , " the thing" , "the damn thing", "the darn bulk cube or whatever it is")

effect: it seems to the most of us that the shieldgenerator is a system of a huge intelligent computersystem and a subspacegenerator (wrongly formerly and still named a "shieldgenerator").
it calculates the next ship which will be attacked by the enemy fleet and builds a subspacefield to send this ship into subspace to save it from being destroyed.
unfortunally it takes a while to do all this complicated calculation stuff and to build the subspace field so the enemy has time to have one turn before the field is build.
if the target ship is destroyed in the next enemy turn the subspace field collapses and has no effect.

if at the end of a combatround own ships of class2 are remaining in the normal space the ships in subspace can spot their signatures and can immediately return to participate in the further battle. otherwise it takes them till the end of the whole battle to join the fleet again.
"
